Impact Statement
Our academic facilities are made available occasionally and, in particular, to pupils applying to high tariff university courses from maintained schools to join with Gordon's pupils in the College's programme of preparation.Seminars on applying to European and American universities were open to local schools as well as specialist lectures and presentations (eg Computing and Physics lectures). Science in the Quad lectures are presented in conjunction with the Institute of Physics for pupils in the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire area.
The College provides facilities and administration for external candidates for BMAT, STEP and ELAT examinations, and for SQA exams in several subjects including Mandarin, Chinese, Maths, Latin and Italian. Members of staff have hosted professional development meetings for staff from local schools.
The pupils in S3 were involved with new local volunteering projects in the community. These involved improving the local environment, wildlife protection and youth band initiatives. The Senior School pupils gave over 8,000 hours of volunteering work locally through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Teacher CPD is provided on a regional and national basis (eg Google Digital Skills Summit). A joint UN Sustainability Goals Conference was arranged at the College for six local Primary Schools and one local Secondary School. A robotics science challenge (VEX) was hosted by the College involving other local Secondary Schools. The Music Department supports local competitions for instance the Burns Federation, the Aberdeen Music Festival, the Aberdeenshire Music Festival and the Aberdeen Jazz Festival. The College invites local organisations such as Rotary and local Primary Schools to attend performances. The College makes facilities available for visiting performers and invites local schools to share these performances. Sports fixtures are arranged with local rugby clubs on a regular basis supporting their programmes. Inter school sports events are held for local pupils annually such as the local Cross-Country Championships race in Aberdeen for primary pupils.
Our outdoor sports facilities are made available to local sports clubs and youth sport initiatives after the end of the school day.
S1 Bursaries
We believe that a Robert Gordon’s College education should be available to any child regardless of family income. Remaining true to the philanthropic ethos of our founder, Robert Gordon, the College is proud to offer a Bursary programme that currently sees 1 in 8 Senior School pupils benefit from our programme.
In partnership with Aberdeen Endowments Trust; other trusts and funds; and the College’s own endowments, free and reduced fee places are available every year to pupils entering Secondary 1 (S1). We awarded 22 bursaries to pupils joining the College in August 2019.
Applications for S1 Bursaries should be made made in January 2021. Bursaries are awarded using a combination of academic merit and financial need. Bursary awards are only available to families with an annual household income under £80k.
Through the Development Office, the College is striving to raise more funds for free and reduced-fee places, and in recent years, has met this goal with considerable success. It is a belief at the heart of the Robert Gordon’s College philosophy that the school should be accessible to all the community of North-East Scotland, as it has been since its foundation.
S5-S6 Scholarships
Burnett Scholarships are available to pupils currently in Fourth or Fifth Year at other schools and offer up to half fee discounts to pupils of outstanding talent in academic subjects, in music, or in sport.
Above all, Fifth and Sixth Year pupils at Robert Gordon's College form a vibrant community of ambitious and well-rounded young people, familiar with expectations of excellence and the rewards of hard work. Our pupils' success is founded on a strong sense of who they are, what they are capable of and what it feels like to be part of a happy and purposeful school community.
Candidates meeting the criteria will be expected to attend an interview at the College; there is no exam involved. Applications for Burnett Scholarships should be made in January 2021.
