Impact Statement

The School plays an active role in the development, formation and maintenance of links with the local community. It also recognises the responsibility it has to the local community in developing student’s knowledge of the immediate area to form an awareness and understanding of its geography, people, history, culture and traditions.

The School welcomes local organisations, clubs and associations using its facilities and extensive grounds, without charge or for a nominal fee. For example, the School has continuously, for the last decade, hosted the Annual General Meetings of the Friends of the Hurtwood, and regularly lets facilities free of charge to local children’s football and cricket clubs. In addition, Masterclasses (in Art, Literature, Maths and Science) are made available to pupils in local maintained schools and the School hosts an annual festival with an academic focus which is open to the local community.

The School increasingly recognises its responsibility within a wider global community and sees its involvement in this community as a developmental and educational opportunity for its students. It continues to maintain its links with Salima LEA School in Malawi and this relationship has been further strengthened by two Duke of Kent School teachers visiting Salima during the 2017-18 academic year. The School continues to support Salima LEA through fundraising activities and its students take part in a number of projects, including letter writing, to maintain this link
