Impact Statement

Mathematics:
We have expanded the Math's Outreach this year to work with additional primary schools. Our Year 6 pupils spend time each week with small groups across 2 primary schools to assist with work towards SATS. We also support math's clubs in two other primary schools to raise confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.

Music:
One of our music teachers continues to spend time at a local primary to help inspire children through singing and we organise an annual choir competition for local primary schools which attracts around 200 participants.

Pre-University Summer Course:
Free places are offered to students attending our local Sixth Form College on our Pre-University Summer Courses. Four students accepted and participated in the programme. This year we also offered places to 2 local schools, 5 students accepted this offer and participated on the course.

Science:
Last year we invited 14 year 16 pupils from Longnor Primary School for a 5-week science exploration leading to a British Science Association CREST Award. They attended every Wednesday afternoon to work on a clean water project that focused on reducing the spread of infectious disease in rural Kenya.

We run a medical support programme, elements of which are open to state schools. Our medic monthly lectures are free and open to all, each month we have attendees from a range of schools. We also have an annual medical conference open to all schools in the region. 57 schools have been invited to the forthcoming event, with 15 state school pupils already signed up, last year 16 state schools attended. We have also invited state school sixth formers to a mini interview training afternoon and our UKCAT training will be open to state schools this year for the first time.

We have appointed 2 outreach coordinators to support the Head of Science in delivering outreach activities to local schools. We are currently developing loan boxes to support the teaching of science by non-specialist primary teachers; this will involve provision of training for them and free use of specialist kit. The outreach coordinators have also opened up spaces on our Monday evening Concord Research lab to join students doing an EPQ project.

We recently hosted the Shropshire area school Lab Technicians Forum for their termly meeting and have made an open offer for any local technicians to join us for training and meetings.
