Year 12 IMPULSE Outreach Training
North Norfolk, June 2018
14 Purcell School students aged 16-17 with outreach training ran creative mentoring projects with whole classes in North Norfolk schools which are all in isolated rural communities where opportunities are limited.
Purcell School students organised ‘interactive musical assemblies’ for all pupils in these schools, enabling them to hear and understand musical instruments, try them out and join in with singing, chanting and clapping games.
• Fakenham Primary School – to approx. 220 pupils
• Little Snoring Primary – to approx. 80 children
• All Saints Stibbard Primary – to approx. 120 children

Docking Primary, Brancaster Primary, Sedgeford Primary (Purcell students ran creative workshops in these schools)
The 14 Purcell School students were guided by outreach trained experts at the Purcell School who helped them deliver the projects in a successful, beneficial manner.
85 children from all these schools came together for a whole day to participate in creative projects run by the 14 Purcell School students. They created new songs, percussion pieces and compositions involving movement and dance.

Year 11 Outreach Training
Year 11 outreach pupil mentoring project with Bushey Academy, Bushey Meads
12 Year 11 students were each allocated one child from each school (24 young people) with musical potential from one of these schools. The Year 11s were carefully trained by outreach staff at the Purcell School to organise two specific tasks.
1) To compose a piece of music with the child, including them both as performers and including creative input from both the child and the year 11 student.
2) To work with a small group of Year 11s and children to arrange and perform a well-known piece of music chosen jointly by the group.
Again, there was highly positive feedback from the two schools involved.
Outreach to Turkey - working with the Island Children’s Orchestra
18 Young string players and composers from the Purcell School worked closely with 88 children from the Island Children’s Orchestra and performed side-by-side with them. Our young composers wrote special pieces for the mixed orchestra, all of which were run through and one of which was rehearsed and performed in a single workshop, organised and conducted by the young composer himself
Greenhills Academy Rwanda, 22 young people are learning to compose and four teachers are being trained to teach composition
Childs Play, Goa, India - two teachers are being trained and 11 pupils are learning to compose
65 pupils in 7 secondary schools throughout Antigua and Barbuda are learning to compose and 11 teachers are learning how to teach composition
Pupils and teachers from these music schools are taking part in a brand new composition training programme and award, which will enable them to learn how to compose their own music. The Purcell School is one of three musical partners involved in this new project which is targeting young people all over the world. The project is called ‘The Commonwealth/International Composition Award’
Apollo Youth Choir – 15 children
Dulwich Harris Academy – 18 teenagers
The Purcell School runs regular song-writing workshops with young people from the Harris Academies and the Apollo Youth Choir. In 2018, 33 young people were invited to the Purcell School to make a CD of the songs written by groups of young people. They were mentored by 11 first study composers and singers from The Purcell School. These songs have also been performed in Commonwealth Day celebrations in Westminster Abbey. Some of the songs have also been performed by the Griffin Schools Trust in a Commonwealth concert on April 20th 2018.
