Impact Statement
Westbourne attaches great importance on the School's relationship and involvement with the local community. Pupils at Westbourne School are encouraged to get involved with the community. They regularly visit residential homes and perform a choir to the elderly. The school partners and engages with state schools in the region by supporting local schools and organisations by way of free and discounted provision of its facilities. These include the Art in the Garden's Exhibition for local artists; Art clubs and Play-ball activity camps held at weekends and during the holidays for children from local schools and community and enabling the local Scouts group to utilise the school minibuses. Children from local schools benefit from our staff time and facilities via Maths Master Classes for Y6 pupils several times a year; providing cricket and rounder tournaments normally involving between 100 and 150 pupils from across Sheffield Schools. Westbourne participates and contributes financially to the local Broomhill festival which attracts the general Sheffield public. We run a summer school (cookery) in the holidays and invite children from local schools to Art and Drama clubs. We also invite nurseries in for special events where we offer specialist subjects PE, music, drama and forest school. We regularly attend and contribute to Sheffield Maths Teacher Network which directly benefits pupils academically across the City. Our core and specialist subject disciplines such as Maths, Geography and Spanish provide mentoring for student teachers on their teaching pathways. Our staff volunteer and contribute their time on charitable governing bodies offering their specialist skills, expertise and academic knowledge.Scholarship exams take place each January for pupils commencing Year 7 in September of the same year and carries a nominal 10% reduction in the School fee.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of evidence of exceptional recent achievement, performance in the scholarship test and an interview.
However, we wish to stress to parents and pupils that entry to Westbourne School Senior School is not dependent upon sitting these exams.
There are five categories of scholarship:
1. Academic
2. Music
3. Sport
4. Drama/Performing Arts
5. All round – Academic + Music + Drama or Sport.
Academic scholars at Westbourne will demonstrate exceptional intellectual potential. They are expected to provide a positive role model for fellow students and maintain excellent standards of academic progress and conduct at all times.
They will be academically stretched by their teachers and will contribute positively and significantly to the academic life of the school.
All-round - Where a student demonstrates significant intellectual potential as well as providing evidence of exceptional talent in a particular discipline.
Music scholars will be expected to take a minimum of one hour instrumental/vocal lessons per week.
Music scholars will then be eligible for a complementary 30-minute instrumental/vocal lesson per week. They will have the opportunity of belonging to a musical group, leading a musical ensemble and attending external concerts.
Music scholars will be expected to take part in at least two musical ensembles, play in music assembly once a term and perform at the annual Scholars’ Concert.
Sports scholars will represent the School and be ambassadors of the School’s sporting values in their chosen field. They are offered a strength and conditioning programme.
They will be allocated a mentor and offered one to one coaching and support to prepare them for competition.
Sports scholars will undertake a leadership role within their chosen sport to inspire others and to be a peer mentor to a fellow student.
Drama scholars will take part in workshops and student led performances where casting, directing, design and ‘gifted’ teams of students lead performance. Scholars can be involved with the wide and varied set of performances in School and further afield.
Drama scholars are expected to fully immerse themselves in the life of the Drama Department and participate in at least two performances over the year. They will show a keen interest and involvement with activities provided, including trips, workshops and visiting theatre companies.
