Impact Statement

Each year the Roche School runs the Wandsworth Borough Battle of the Books. 10 to 12 local state primary schools run an enrichment book club for able readers in Year 4. The Roche School organises the book list and activities for this club and runs a finals day in which the participating children come to the Roche School to compete in drama, art and quiz rounds related to the book list to become Battle of the Book champions. State school teachers and pupils are very positive in their feedback about the initiative which would not happen otherwise (please note the neighbouring borough Richmond runs the same initiative organised by the state schools themselves but Wandsworth has never done so). Approximately 75% of participating state schools return to participate in the competition the following year. The children participating, benefit from enrichment to their curriculum by reading challenging books for their year group and participating in cross curricular activities related to them such as art and drama (provided by the Roche School in the activity packs which the schools receive). The final day also gives the state school children the opportunity to compete against others in a positive competitive atmosphere usually found only in sporting competitions.
