Impact Statement
Impact of Educational Partnerships Work in 2022-2023
Winchester College continues to develop a collaborative and meaningful programme of partnerships with secondary school in Hampshire and along the south coast. We currently partner with 18 secondary schools, nine of which are situated in disadvantaged areas, and offer resources via our Empower programme to a wider group. The benefits are mutual, with dialogue between teachers and pupils, the sharing of resources and the opportunity for educational visits to Winchester College as well as to partner schools.
· 90 events were hosted for secondary school pupils
· 8 after-school clubs covering Maths, Science, Economics and Classics
· 2114 pupil visits from/to our partner schools
· 66 Winchester College teachers provided 546 hours teaching time to partner school pupils
· 96 mock interviews for sixth form students from Bishop of Winchester Academy, Midhurst Rother College, Barton Peveril Academy and UTC Portsmouth
· 69 teachers benefitted from CPD opportunities in Physics and Classics
We continue to develop our provision for partner schools, in conversation with teachers from those schools, and are able to provide an increasing range of online resources in science, careers as well as talks and lectures. Our focus remains in organising trips to the College for partner schools pupils, with transport provided by the College.
Midhurst Rother College
Winchester College and Midhurst Rother College have been working together for 12 years. Since 2008 the merger of three local schools in West Sussex into MRC under the sponsorship of United Learning has seen remarkable development. A distance of thirty miles has not inhibited the dialogue and co-operation between the two schools.
Crown and Manor Club
Winchester College maintains a link with the Crown and Manor Club, Hoxton, which has been sustained for over eighty years.
We do not have any preconception of what a Winchester College pupil looks like, and nor should you.
We look for boys and girls who will thrive in an academically challenging and close-knit social community. At the same time, we are committed to ensuring access, and each year welcome pupils from a range of cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, who will strengthen that community and contribute to society long after they have left the school. Financial support to talented pupils otherwise unable to attend Winchester is central to the school’s original purpose and our vision of Winchester in the 21st Century.
Bursaries range from 5-100% of the full fee covering tuition, food and board. Awards can also include support for additional items – including school trips, a laptop and music lessons. In the past year bursary recipients have received assistance for academic trips across Europe, the school’s annual cricket tour (which last year went to Dubai) and help with the cost of planning for University applications. Many of our final year bursary recipients for 2022/23 were successful in securing places at Oxford, Cambridge and other world-class institutions where they are now continuing their studies.
For the coming school year 2023/24 we are proud to be providing nearly £5m of bursary support to over 140 pupils, of whom 29 are paying no fees at all. The average award is 72%, and 107 families pay 50% or less. Since 2005 we have provided bursary support of £35.8m to over 520 pupils.
