Social Service Visiting
Partner: Tehira Care Home
Partner type: Community Group
Each week VIth form pupils visit one of a number of local care homes in town. Here our pupils interact with residents and play games or take part in activities run by the establishment.
Other homes that we serve include:
Rugby Care Centre
The Elms, Clifton upon Dunsmore
Clifton Court, Clifton upon Dunsmore
Town Thorns, Easenhall
In addition to visiting these care homes members of the VIth formers visit local elderly people in their own homes to chat to them and to render assistance where appropriate.
Twice a year, at Christmas and in the summer towards the end of the academic year, members of the elderly community visit the school for a party, sing carols, play bingo, take part in a quiz and, over tea and cake, listen to our young musicians perform for them.
Aims of the project
To improve the lives of local elderly people and to foster closer ties with the community.
Background and goals
The project came about in the harsh winter of 1962-1963 when a number of Rugby pupils took it upon themselves to call at the homes of local elderly folk to see if they were in need of help. The formation of the Community Action group that now serves some 60-80 local elderly residents stems from that time.
Several members of the school teaching staff are responsible for supervising the pupils.
16-18. Some 35 members of the school are involved each week.
Frequency and duration
Weekly, on a Wednesday between around 2.00-4.00pm. An on-going project.
