Reach Out does NGHS 140 Years
Partner: Southwold Primary School and Early Years' Centre, Radford, Nottingham
Partner type: Maintained School
We transported our visited to 1875 with a series of activities that celebrated Nottingham Girls' High School's 140 anniversary.
Our first activty was an economic trading game, where we discussed the benefits of countries benefitting from collaborative partnerships and or democratic governance.
The second activity was a numeracy challenge incorporating mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen-name, Lewis Carol. Children were asked to complete Carol Grids and Alice in Wonderland Table Plans before attempting to produce long caterpillars based on simple addition and division rules.
We then ventured outside where Miss Lynn and Miss Riley set some tasks to be completed in 1 minute and 40 seconds.
After lunch we had a dictation lesson. Boys and girls were separated as they would not have normally studied together during that time. Boys were given Peter Piper tongue twister and the girls were given Betty Botter.
The day was fantastic and a great way to celebrate 140 years of NGHS with some of our partner schools.
Aims of the project
As part of NGHS's year long celebrations, we invited partner schools to participate in a 1875 inspired activity day.
This was a purely enrichment based day with activities covering aspects of literacy and numeracy.
Resources were designed by subject specialists for all rounds including Business Studies staff for our Economics Trades Game and Lewis Carol inspired maths.
We based our event in the Senior School library and our Outdoor Learning area.
All resources are available on Reach Out's website and free of charge.
