Reach Out does Business and Social Enterprise 2016

Partner: Porchester Junior School, Carlton, Nottingham
Partner type: Maintained School
Project category: Academic

For our Business and Enterprise Day 2017, we asked children to assess their local area and think about a solution to a social, cultural or environmental issue.

In pairs, teams had to research previous case studies of social entrepreneurship in Nottingham and think up initial ideas. By the late morning, children had to think of one achievable idea and develop it into a project plan, filling in a proposal form that considered cost, stakeholders, timescales and outcomes.

The variety of proposals included an ‘Anti-cigarette Store’, a ‘Cultural Cookery Class’ and an animal theme park with sports complex.

Aims of the project

After a series of successful Business and Enterprise Days at NGHS, we wanted children to think critically and creatively about their local area. Focusing on social enterprise, the event enabled schools to come up with a solution to a problem.

The end result depended on the school and local habitus of each child. it was important for other schools to discover the range of social, cultural or environmental issues within their local community, recvognised by children their own age.

The project also gave children the opportunity to have a voice and address an issue which would otherwise be out of their control.

beneficiaries include participating children, Reach Out staff, NGHS staff and NGHS governors. Some teams presented their ideas back at school during assembly.

Feedback has been very successful.

Resources

Designed by SLT and Business Studies teacher, our resources were focused on project planning and are available free of charge on our website.

Impact

This project has been incredibly successful. We have since been mentoring one local school on a Culture Club scheme - a series of cookery and language lessons phased out to fellow pupils.

Children leading the project wish to extend the Club to parents and siblings, establishing a community of value in sharing.

NGHS will be officially sponsoring this project in Winter 2017. Continual mentorship will follow.

Pupil involvement

67 boys and girls from Years 4 and 5 across 10 schools.
