Pupils volunteer as rugby coaches at Longstone Primary School

Partner: Longstone Primary School
Partner type: Community Group
Project category: Sporting Partnerships

As part of our Koinonia (Teamwork with the Community) programme, Lower Sixth Form pupils attend Longstone Primary School on a Wednesday afternoon to offer core fitness training and an introduction to basic rugby skills.

Aims of the project

To promote the "sport for all" ethos.

Background and goals

The project started in October 2016 at the request of Longstone Primary School (our pupils already volunteers as mentors there).

1 member of staff, 1.25 hours per week.

The Headteacher of Longstone Primary School gave this feedback:

“I also wanted to pass on to you that, thanks to the excellent rugby coaching your boys have done this year, our P6 boys came second in a city-wide rugby tournament last month!  This is down to the quality of your boys’ coaching as, up until this point, our P6 boys had not had much rugby so a huge thank you!”

Pupil involvement

In 2016/17, a group of 10 pupils aged 16-17 took part from Merchiston.

60 pupils in P6 and P7 took part from Longstone Primary (2 classes of 30).

Frequency and duration

Once a week from early October to late March (20 weeks).
