Primary Academic Support

Partner: IntoUniversity Oxford South East
Partner type: Community Group
Project category: Volunteering

Sixth form Headington pupils assist with after school academic support sessions for primary pupils with the aim of improving literacy and numeracy.

Aims of the project

To provide teaching assistant support and use of facilities so that the charity can continue its work in raising standards in literacy and numeracy in local primary schools, and to raise aspirations with a view to ultimately helping young people with applications to university.  The Oxford South East branch of IntoUniversity supports young people in the Blackbird Leys area of Oxford.

Background and goals

A connection was first made through an ex-employee of Headington School who was working for IntoUniversity.  The project begins in September 2017 and initially it will run throughout the academic year 2017-18.

Resources

Headington School needs to be able to arrange for sixth form pupils to travel to regular weekly sessions at the IntoUniversity centre on Sorrel road.

Impact

An assessment of the benefit of the partnership will be made at the end of the academic year 2017-18, once the first year's support has been provided.

Pupil involvement

A group of up to ten Year 12 Headington Pupils are involved in offering weekly sessions.

Frequency and duration

This is an on-going weekly arrangement.
