Musical concert for patients

Partner: Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton
Partner type: Community Group
Project category: Music

On Tuesday 18 June, six IPS Music Scholars visited Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton where, amid the beep of ventilators and infusion pumps, the hiss of oxygen, the clatter of trolleys and the hubbub of voices as doctors and nurses made rounds, they performed a music recital to elderly and infirm patients in one of the wards.  Our pupils played a number of pieces - both classical and jazz - to the delight of staff and patients.  Afterwards, one patient said to the pupils that they were “the most talented group of children he had ever heard” and one of the nurses mentioned that one gentleman who had not spoken a word for several weeks suddenly burst into conversation as the pupils played.  One cannot underestimate the power of music to heal and we hope this is the start of a long lasting relationship with Queen Mary’s Hospital.
