Junior Science Day at St Teresa’s Primary School

Partner: St Teresa's RC Primary School, Irlam, Manchester
Partner type: Maintained School
Project category: Academic

One of Withington's Chemistry teachers delivered a day of science lessons at a local primary school, benefiting the children taught, but also providing insight to the school's staff about how they might deliver science-based activities within their own resources and facilities.

Aims of the project

To provide a fun science day to St Teresa's pupils and help their staff to continue to develop science-based activities for their pupils.

Background and goals

One of Withington’s Chemistry teachers volunteered her time to help with St Teresa’s Science Day.

Resources

The teacher planned and ran the science lessons at St Teresa’s.

Impact

The day enabled all children at this primary school to take part in science activities; a different activity was organised for each class. They had access to specialist teaching which enhanced the learning experience.

Students were highly engaged during the sessions which were based on interactive practical activities. Feedback from teachers, students and parents was very positive. Students also submitted entries for a science project competition, which were judged by the WGS teacher. Students spoke articulately and accurately with real passion and enthusiasm for their projects, which were of an excellent standard.

Eight teachers at St Teresa’s observed the science lessons, and thus gained insight into potential science-based activities they could run in the future.

Pupil involvement

Over 200 pupils from St Teresa’s attended a science lesson over the course of the day.

Frequency and duration

One-day event.
