Educational Partnership between City Heights E-ACT Academy and Dulwich College

Dulwich College is the local education partner to City Heights E-ACT Academy in Tulse Hill. The Deputy Master External is an Academy Ambassador, and the Staff Tutor of the College, with their counterpart at City Heights, oversees projects where teachers and pupils can learn and work together. Examples of collaboration include:

  • Each year, recent alumni of Dulwich College work at City Heights in their gap year as Academy Assistants. They work in classrooms with individuals or small groups of pupils, and in support and administration roles, providing an important bridge between teachers and pupils.
  • Through the College's Community Action activities, there is an established programme of older students acting as Reading Mentors to Year 7 and 8 pupils at City Heights.
  • There are projects (Maths, Spanish, English) where Dulwich College teachers and Year 13 pupils provide collaborative and enriching activities as part of their Monday afternoon Liberal Studies programme.
  • Both schools encourage formal links through lunches, visits and middle management development programmes, and informal collaboration between subject leaders and departments. There have been mutual observations across departments, and involvement of City Heights pupils for a Learning Detective project. Where possible, trainee teachers also undertake placements between the schools. 
  • Dulwich College and City Heights are using educational research in a joint project to investigate and assess the power of character development and Learning to Learn programmes in producing independent, successful lifelong learners.  

Aims of the project

The aim of the project is to support the establishment and growth of this new Academy by offering the experience and advice of staff from Dulwich College, and to develop educational links that are mutually beneficial to teachers and pupils at both schools. Success depends on identifying areas where joint projects can be of direct practical benefit to pupils or staff.

Background and goals

Dulwich College was asked by Lambeth Council and by E-ACT to sit on the project development board for a new Academy in Lambeth some years before the new school opened in 2013. Once the school was established, Dulwich College's role extended: it continues to play a role in the school's governance but also supports the development of joint projects involving pupils and staff.

Resources

Both schools commit a certain amount of time by senior management to ensure the smooth functioning of the educational partnership.  Three or four other key members of teaching staff are involved on both sides. The College also hosts City Heights' annual sports day and pupils from City Heights are welcomed to relevant College events such as the Year 7 Hispanic and the Lower School Engineering Days and Dulwich Linguistic week.  

Impact

The educational partnership is still being developed as City Heights E-ACT Academy grows towards a full 11-18 secondary school. Assessment of the partnership activities relies on feedback from those involved as to the success and impact of the activities undertaken.

The aim is to provide support for the Academy's educational work, especially its transition to KS4 and Sixth Form, but also to establish links and activities which benefit both schools through shared experience and good practice.

Pupil involvement

Older students from Dulwich College are involved in some specific activities with pupils from City Heights E-ACT Academy, for example mentoring pupils in extension sessions. Recent leavers from the College also act as gap year assistants at the Academy, helping, for example, with mathematics or modern languages.

Frequency and duration

The educational partnership between the two schools is ongoing.
