The Times has reported that a selective sixth-form academy is to open in Tottenham in 2017, backed by Highgate School. The sixth-form school will also be sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur football club next to its north London stadium and will be modelled on the London Academy of Excellence (LAE). The LAE is a free school set up in Stratford, east London, where teenagers study only A-levels favoured by top universities and applicants need at least five A grades at GCSE.
The LAE Tottenham, which will open in September next year, will be run separately but follow the Stratford model.
Barnaby Lenon, Chairman of Governors of the LAE Stratford, has agreed to support the setting up of second LAE and commented that it is a positive spin-off from the first very successful free school.
