London Academy of Excellence (LAE) named Sunday Times Sixth form College of the Year

The London Academy of Excellence (LAE) in Newham, East London, was today named The Sunday Times Sixth-form College of the Year.

The LAE — known as the Eton of the East End — is the first free school to win a Sunday Times school of the year award. It topped the rankings for sixth-form colleges, which are based on last year’s exam results at A-level. Among those hoping for a top university place is Reiss Akhtar, 17, who is predicted three A*s in history, English literature and economics. He has an interview at Cambridge and is also applying to Harvard.

Barnaby Lenon, chairman of governors at the LAE and chairman of ISC, talks to Schools Together in about how the Academy came about. Please click here to read the case study.
