Year 5 Pupil and Adult Maths Masterclasses
Norwich School has strong links with the Royal Institute, and delivers annual Maths Symposiums for Year 6 pupils and Year 9 pupils. The Maths Masterclasses were seen as an opportunity to engage Year 5 pupils and their parents and carers in exploring mathematical thinking.
Norwich School provided all resources for the event, including venue, pupil helpers and staffing. The event was free of charge for attendees.
Head of Mathematics at the school, Dr Simon Kirby, described the morning as “a fantastic morning of maths with exceptionally keen pupils looking to find out more about numbers as well as trying to understand why numbers do what they do. It was really nice to see adults doing maths too, and also asking questions! Maths is more than just numbers and sums, it hides away some beautiful behaviour too."
Early feedback from the first event has been very positive, with both pupils and adults alike enjoying the opportunity to cover some amazing mathematical concepts.
50 pupils from local state primary schools took part alongside their parents and carers.
We have seen a very positive response from local families for the Maths Masterclasses, with registrations filling quickly. Plans are ahead to replicate the series in 2019.
