Mock COP26 & COP27
With the environmental passion shown in the Northwood College community we wanted to provide an opportunity for our eco passionate students to explore the world of eco-politics.
Inviting in the InterClimate Network (and organisation with the aim to help young people in the UK feel empowered and enabled to lead, advocate and take action towards environmentally sustainable behaviours and societal change), we wanted to open up the event to schools in the surrounding areas. The more involved, the greater the number of voices and minds, and the more valuable an experience it would be.
Aims
All students involved got the experience of researching the varying needs and difficulties that different countries have in regards to 'going green' and combatting climate change.
This included industrial development, economy and their own current emissions.
Students were grouped with students from other schools to enable mixing, communication and sharing of ideas and experiences.
The event allowed for development of collaboration, public speaking, and increased understanding to the complexities around the climate crisis around the world.
Background
With the Northwood College community we wanted to provide an opportunity for our eco passionate students to explore the world of eco-politics.
Our Environmental Coordinator was following the development of the COP26 & COP27, and through her connection with Eco leaders in other schools she learnt of the opportunity to host a mock event to bring this opportunity to our local area. Northwood College 6th Form students took the lead in oroganising this event for Mock COP27.
Resources
InterClimate Network provided all of the background resources, with country profiles and articles that students are required to read and research prior to the event.
We provided a venue large enough to accommodate approximately 100 students in an open lay out conducive to open discussion and dialogue.
Teaching staff attended in order to provide supervision and first aid only at the required ratio of staff to student
Pupil Involvement
Students from years 10 - 13 were invited to attend. With a recommendation that those particularly interested in environment issues and politics attend.
Frequency
This is an annual event.
