Maths Challenge

Leicester High School for Girls successfully hosted the UKMT Primary Team Maths Challenge 2025, welcoming pupils from five local primary schools for a day of mathematical problem-solving and teamwork. Organised by the Maths Department, the event provided an opportunity for young mathematicians to collaborate, think creatively and develop their skills through a series of challenging rounds, including Crossnumber, Logic, Relay and Shuttle. The competition fostered confidence, resilience and a love of mathematics while strengthening relationships with local schools. Feedback was extremely positive, with participating schools praising the organisation and educational value of the day. Background

The initiative was established in 2025 following a suggestion from Leicester High School for Girls' Head of Maths, Mr Newell. Recognising the value of mathematical enrichment and the opportunity to strengthen relationships with local primary schools, he proposed hosting a UKMT Primary Team Maths Challenge at Leicester High. The aim was to bring together pupils from a range of schools to enjoy mathematics in a collaborative and competitive environment, while providing an engaging outreach opportunity for the wider community. Invitations were extended to local primary schools, and the event quickly gained support, resulting in a successful inaugural challenge that laid the foundations for future annual events.

Resources

The success of the UKMT Primary Team Maths Challenge relies on a combination of school facilities, staff expertise and student support.

School Facilities: The event uses Leicester High School for Girls' facilities, including the Gymnasium for the main competition activities and other teaching spaces as required throughout the day.
Teaching Staff: The Maths Department plays a central role in planning, organising and delivering the event. Approximately 3–4 members of staff are involved throughout the day, from set-up and registration through to the delivery of challenges and prize-giving.
Student Support: Year 10 pupils assist with welcoming visitors, supporting teams, helping with logistics and ensuring the smooth running of the event.
Time Commitment: Staff are involved for the duration of the event, including preparation beforehand and supervision throughout the school day.
Financial Contribution: There is no financial contribution associated with the partnership. The event is delivered using existing school resources and staff time as part of the school's commitment to educational outreach and community engagement.
