Mandarin Club

A weekly club for Year 5 children from local primary schools to experience a range of activities focussed on language learning, covering many Chinese cultural topics such as music, crafts, calligraphy, dance and festivals.

As part of our Confucius Classroom status we promote and develop the Mandarin language with our local community. Many local schools are not able to employ specialist teachers in all areas and therefore we aim to work together to ensure that other schools benefit from the specialism we have developed. To date sessions have been delivered at Saighton Primary School, Chester Blue Coat, The Arches, Mickle Trafford and Hoole Primary School.

Aims

To provide local school children the opportunity to learn the world's most widely-spoken language through a free weekly club, where they learn basic conversational Mandarin.

Pupils from various primary schools enjoy a free weekly after school club where they learn basic conversational Mandarin from our CLEC teacher aiming to benefit junior children in maintained schools and to inspire a love of languages in local children.

Background

The Queen’s School is the only independent school in the north of England to be officially recognised for the excellence of its work in promoting the study of Mandarin Chinese. The school was awarded the coveted accolade of being designated a Confucius Classroom and as part of that status offers children from local primary schools the opportunity to learn the world’s most widely-spoken language through an outreach programme.

Resources

One CLEC teacher planning and delivering the weekly club.

Refreshments for the children attending.

Mandarin teacher to plan, resource and deliver the lessons which are in the primary schools.

Travelling time to and from the schools.

Cost of teacher's teaching, travel and planning time

Impact

Local primary school children who may not otherwise get the opportunity to learn Mandarin benefit from the resources, facilities and expertise of The Queen’s School. The club enables children to enjoy the challenge of learning an exciting language and feedback has been very successful. The club also provides enrichment for the more able and talented pupils in local schools.

The feedback from schools has been extremely positive. The quality of pupil engagement is high and teaching and learning activities are stimulating and accessible to pupils of all abilities

Pupil Involvement

Around 20 children from local primary schools sign up to take part in the club each academic year. Boys and girls welcome.

Usually a full year group often split into two sessions – we have worked with Year 3, 5 and 6 pupils.

Frequency

A weekly club offered during the spring and summer terms.

These are ongoing projects expanded to other schools.
